'It’s fun to play this brash, risky character every night.'

Colby Foytik loves portraying the bad boy musician Tommy DeVito in the tour of Jersey Boys. Foytik talked to Broadway.com about playing DeVito in the hit show, which plays New Orleans' Mahalia Jackson Theater through January 27.

“Everything Tommy does is fearless and without regret, even if it happens to be what sends the group into turmoil,” Foytik said of his character’s dealings with loan sharks and the mob. “It’s fun to play this brash, risky character every night.”

Much of the musical's drama focuses on how the bandmates work through DeVito’s transgressions—usually by coming to his rescue. Foytik expressed that the message of Jersey Boys is “family is everything. Whether it's your real family or you road family, it is the glue that holds everything together. These are the people that will see you at your best and your worst, and hopefully that sense of unconditional love will get you through the rough times.”

Foytik’s onstage family includes Brad Weinstock as Frankie Valli, Brandon Andrus as Nick Massi and Jason Kappus as Bob Gaudio. The show features over 30 hit songs, including the beloved tunes “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You."

“The music is so universally appealing and the show touches everyone that sees it in some way or another,” Foytik said. “Being a part of that is really magical.”
