Wicked Tour Star Jenn Gambatese On Playing the Most 'Popular' Oznian

'The best part about being in 'Wicked' is feeling how profoundly our storytelling affects the audience.'

Jenn Gambatese loves being “popular” in the national tour of Wicked. The Broadway vet plays Glinda in the blockbuster musical, currently playing at New Orleans’ Mahalia Jackson Theater through June 2. Below, the actress talks about her similarities to the character.

“The best part about playing Glinda is the full journey she takes throughout the show,” Gambatese said. “On the plus side, I think I share her enthusiasm and positivity. On the not-so-plus side, I'm sure I've shared her ability to emotionally manipulate people to get my way.” Is Gambatese a fashion plate like Oz’s resident fashionista? “I sadly do not share her keen sense of style on a daily basis.”

Gambatese’s Broadway credits include Tarzan, All Shook Up, Hairspray, Is He Dead? and Footloose. She stars in Wicked alongside Alison Luff as Elphaba, Curt Hansen as Fiyero, Kim Zimmer as Madame Morrible and John Davidson as the Wizard.

Featuring songs by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, Wicked centers on the unlikely friendship between Glinda and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.

“The best part about being in Wicked is feeling how profoundly our storytelling affects the audience,” Gambatese said. “The knowledge that true friendships are transformative in our lives means that I don't want to take mine for granted.”
